Item Description
7/8" with back paper by Pioneer Nov., NY. The name "Tellegen" on the button refers to Lou Tellegen a movie actor who returned to the stage in a play titled "Blind Youth" as printed on this button, which opened in New York City November 4, 1917. The slogan on the button "Stand By Wilson" is explained by a short article in the New York Times February 1, 1918. The article is titled "Wilson Thanks Actor For Offer" with following text "Announcement Was Made Yesterday That Lou Tellegen, The Actor, Had Received A Letter From President Wilson Thanking The Actor For His Offer To Form The Stand-By-Wilson League. Tellegan, In A Letter To The President A Week Ago, In Analyzing The Forces Against The President, Said It Was High Time That The Mouthings Of Selfish Politicians Be Drowned And Counteract The Accumulating And Determined Effort To Postpone The Progress Of The War Until The Next Presidential Election. 'You Have Described And Analyzed The Forces Against Me Very Accurately Indeed,' Wrote The President." A photocopy of this article will come with the button which is NM displaying Mint and the only example we've seen. Julie Powell Collection.
