Auction #211 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 1196 in auction 211
Item Description
Richard Nixon held a press conference November 7, 1962 following his loss to the Democratic incumbent Pat Brown in the 1962 California gubernatorial election. Nixon appeared before 100 reporters at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Obviously embittered, Nixon lashed out at the media and proclaimed that "You Don't Have Nixon To Kick Around Anymore, Because, Gentlemen, This Is My Last Press Conference." This five item lot leads off with a 3" plastic encased card with bar pin reverse and tiny staple holding the card within the case. Text reads "Win With Nixon/Election Night 1962/Press/November 6, 1962/Beverly Hilton Hotel." This card is dated for election day but the race proved very tight and the counting of the votes went into the morning hours of November 7. Brown gained steadily and by 10am Wednesday morning Nixon conceded to Brown. Nixon's Press secretary Herb Klein appeared before the press and began his press conference with the announcement that Nixon would not speak to the media. Klein was only 10 minutes into the conference when an aide notified him that Nixon had changed his mind and would speak. Nixon appeared tired and spoke in a quavering voice delivering what would be describes as a "15-Minute Monologue" mostly focusing on his criticisms of the press. In fact, he began his remarks stating that "Now That All The Members Of The Press Are So Delighted I Have Lost, I'd Like To Make A Statement Of My Own." Likely the same "Press" representative that wore this badge election night was also present November 7th for the historic news conference. Condition of this is Mint as issued. With the lot comes a 2" wide empty pack of "Nixon For Governor" matches. Small wear on the striker. Also included is a personal business card of "Richard M. Nixon" giving the office address on Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles. Couple tiny age dots. Also included is 3" plastic encased badge reading "Nixon Telethon." This telethon took place in the Fall of 1962 to raise funds for the campaign. The final item in this group is a souvenir given to the workers. On a generic but original card is a three dimensional brass toned telephone with needle post and clutch reverse. This piece is 1" long. Mint. An outstanding group of items related to a very low point in Nixon's career, probably exceeded only by Watergate.
