Auction #211 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 1196 in auction 211
Item Description
Item consists of a pleated purple rosette 3" in diameter surrounding a silvery fabric covered 1.75" button at the center inscribed with the word "Official." There is a single pinpoint dot of fabric off the first letter "I" but near microscopic. Back of the piece has pin extending through a paper label by the Chicago maker Geo. Lauterer Corp. Staples join a 6" ribbon with gold text. Fabric has a 3.5" and 2" pair of hairline creases that show little. A few of the gold letters have lost a bit of color but everything remains easily readable. This very limited issue badge represents a rather historic night during the 1960 election. Chicago Mayor Richard Daley organized a spectacular "Torch Light Parade" not only honoring JFK but all the state and local candidates which occurred prior to the 8pm speech which the Democratic Party of Cook County paid to have broadcast in prime time on NBC-TV. In other TV markets the Republicans had purchased prime time for an address by President Eisenhower on behalf of Nixon. However the Chicago purchase kept the Republicans out of the prime time market in Chicago and this event is considered a remarkable example of Daley's political stagecraft. Julie Powell Collection.
