Auction #211 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 1196 in auction 211
Item Description
1" real photo sepia with W&H back paper shows woman with name caption "Anna Delony Martin." At the top is the name of Wagners musical drama "Parsifal." Button is c.1908, from her time on the Chautauqua circuit where she did readings which she characterized as a "Picture Drama", a new form of interpretative reading. She was active in the women's suffrage movement across the United States and prominent in an August 1915 event when the "Torch Of Victory" which was touring among suffrage organizations via automobile was taken under the auspices of the Women's Political Union from New York to New Jersey where women intended to use it in their campaign to acquire the ballot. The event was reported in a New York Times August 7, 1915 article with the text noting that "During The Ceremony Mrs. Anna Delony Martin Will Recite Percy Mackaye's 'Hymn To Equal Suffrage'." NM displaying Mint. Also see autographed 1872 Presidential campaign card of early suffrage advocate George Francis Train #182.
