Item Description
Trio from 1952. First is 7x10-3/8” cover proof w/blank back for July-Aug. first issue. Two punch holes at top as issued, hairline horizontal fold through center as mailed. Fine. Next is 6x9” typewritten sheet w/Independent News Co. letterhead dated April 28, 1952 to “IND Distributor” noting that first issue goes on sale May 21. PS mentions enclosed autographed photo. Letter is signed in ink by circulation manager M.J. Kilbane and signed at upper right corner in pencil by DC Comics executive J. Liebowitz. Letter has lt. tanning along right side and bottom edge. Fine. Facsimile autographed photo is Exc. Joseph Liebowitz began working for Harry Donenfeld in 1929 publishing girlie pulps, w/Donenfeld eventually owning Independent News. The two got into the comic book business in 1935 distributing Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson “Fun Comics”. When Wheeler-Nicholson couldn’t pay his bills in 1938, Liebowitz gained control of his “Detective Comics” publications and continued w/DC , then Warner Communications, until 1991. Historic trio w/limited distribution.
