Item Description
This historic rarity is originally from the collection of famed numismatist and 1877 pioneering cataloguer of Lincoln campaign items Andrew Zabriskie (1853-1916). The item was among those sold from his collection by Sotheby's in 1999 (lot #580). The piece is a deeply embossed silvered brass shell badge with horizontal bar pin on reverse. The five-pointed star design has accent rays eminating between the arms of the star. Raised center border reads "Emancipation" at top and "Jan. 1, 1863" below with the tiny letter "K" below Lincoln's shoulder. At center is bearded bust facing right. This raised center area has beautiful metallic patina largely in blue tones. Majority of silver luster, although naturally muted by time remains on surrounding star and raised design. Reverse complete with original catch and pin, which is a little wobbly as made but firmly anchored to its hinge. Historic and rare, in Exc. condition and with the ultimate in provenance. A copy of the 1999 Sotheby's catalogue is available to the high bidder upon request.
