Item Description
While this superb ferro is listed as Sullivan-DeWitt AL1860-86, Tom Slater noted it was his first example and the same is true for Hake's. Slightly larger than the average size at 1-1/8" (30mm), the obverse depicts ferrotype portrait of beardless Lincoln with inscription above "Abraham Lincoln," set in a circular dark red composition frame decorated with a geometrical leaf design. Reverse portrait of Hamlin to half right with inscription "Hannibal Hamlin," above. The only flaw is slight darkness as made on Lincoln's lower left cheek. Hardly a flaw, but noted for accuracy is a tiny 1/16"x3/16" area at center right of Lincoln's image where the emulsion is without gloss but this only shows in certain light angles and emulsion on both sides is otherwise with about 95% exceptionally reflective glossy finish. Other than the "doughnut" style ferros or ones exceptionally large, this is one of the few Lincoln ferros with a striking design style of its own. Rare and near pristine from the Nov. 2004 Slater auction of the Joe Brown collection.
