Item Description
In 1936 Walt Disney left United Artists and signed on w/RKO to distribute his animated shorts/cartoons. That studio, in conjunction w/Disney, decided they needed to produce eye-catching promotional material for the animated cartoons. They began by producing silk-screened 30x40" posters instead of the more typical one-sheet posters and they also tested this standee as an in-theater advertising vehicle w/replaceable placard, to bring audiences in. This large full color standee was printed and then applied to a pressboard backing and wooden easel back for display in theater lobbies. The individual placards such as the one offered here (advertising the 1937 Mickey Mouse cartoon "The Whalers") were then distributed to the exhibitor, who would attach the placard to the standee. Standee measures 35.5x59.5" tall and depicts full body image of Mickey Mouse, who stands w/one arm raised, w/blank marquee area at top designed for displaying the previously mentioned placards as if Mickey is holding them. Standee has had scattered professional restoration to lt. stains in the white, yellow and green areas; worn edges of the yellow and green bkg. and small holes in the standee where the studio affixed the top poster to the easel frame behind it. Some moisture staining along the bottom edge has also had restoration. Left and right margins beside "Hey Look!" text and Mickey's head have 5.5" and 9.5" areas of creasing, w/some cracking to surface paper. Top left corner of green bkg. has .75" sliver of surface paint off. Restored to a Fine/VF appearance. Comes w/14x28" title placard for use w/display. Features three different scenes from "The Whalers" cartoon, first showing Donald Duck in crow's nest being irritated by seagulls, Donald w/ bow and arrow and Goofy about to light harpoon cannon fuse; and Mickey Mouse and Donald fishing from ship's prow. Placard has been mounted to thin cardboard and shows some scattered handling wear. Scattered restoration includes repairs to small holes at corners, small margin tears and some scattered yellow paint touch-ups. Scenes have aged slightly but placard has a VF display overall w/restoration. Wonderful display piece, easily to become the centerpiece of any Disney collection.
