Item numbers 989 through 2633 in auction 212
Item Description
Pair of 2-1/8" dia. buttons, both acquired by NYC collector Marshall Levin directly from an unspecified maker. Levin had inside connections w/many NYC button makers and documented certain buttons that went into his collection w/marker on reverses. Proof is marked "TEST 6/82." Production button is unmarked as it is dated on the front. In-house test button is likely unique and the production button is one of only two in the Levin Collection. Front of each reads "June 5th, 1982 - Xenon - 224 West 43rd Street - NYork NYork - 9 PM." and show trio of jiving buildings under crescent moon. This popular disco was founded in June, 1978 by Howard Stein and Peppo Vanini and was a competitor of the popular Studio 54. Stein was a concert promoter who brought such groups to NYC as The Who, David Bowie, Rod Stewart and The Rolling Stones. He and Vanini met at Steve Rubell's Studio 54. Xenon was considered easier to get into than Studio 54, making it the only NYC club capable of competing against it. Patrons were considered more of a "fashion crowd" while Studio 54 was more "Hollywood." Among the celebrities Xenon attracted were Andy Warhol, Michael Jackson, Mick Jagger and Richard Avedon, all honored by special parties held at Xenon. Other celebrities included - designer Roy Halston Frowick, Jack Nicholson, Tom Cruise, Cher, O.J. Simpson, Christopher Reeve, Elton John, Roger Moore, John McEnroe, Tony Curtis, Brooke Shields, John F. Kennedy Jr. and Robin Williams. This button may be for the 4th Anniversary of the club or for a celebrity party event. Iconic and rare artifacts of the early 1980s disco/celebrity scene. Both buttons are Mint and come with Hake's COA to document their Levin Collection origin.
