Item Description
2.75x5-3/8" and .5" thick with front and back joined by accordion folds expandable to about 1" deep so that four cigars can be stored in the slide out interior compartment. Some of these for Clay, Taylor and Scott do not identify the candidate so this is an exceptionally nice example identifying Taylor and celebrating his Mexican War service. A long line of soldiers and two riders on horses are depicted in the small background details. Has .25x.5" small area of color loss below one horse hoof and a 1-1/8" hairline vertical split at bottom of one of the two accordion folds. Typical near microscopic crazing of the front beautifully painted scene and longer but normal craze lines all over the shellacked reverse which is accented all over by irregular patterns of irregular circles, each with a metallic copper color. The only other example we could find was in a Heritage 2009 auction which had front and back covers separated on one side and still realized over $2,100.00. The more often seen Clay example has Hake 2004 guide value of $2,850.00. This Taylor example is unlisted in Hake and in VF condition.
