Item Description
Item consists of original 19th century black velvet covered wood board 12.5x15" which has been fixed by copper staples into a modern blond wood frame 20.5x22.5" for display. The velvet is missing a narrow sliver at top 3" long by .25" (or less) deep. Velvet is totally clean. Attached by two tiny nails is a jig-sawed piece of wood 1/8" thick. The only missing wood is a hairline of "stem" gone from between the upper left leaf and the edge of the large letter "G." The wood cut-out is 12.5x14.5". At center is 3.75x5.5" opening for c.1880s real photo on cardboard. Likely made by artistic wood-worker member of a Grand Army Of The Republic post. There is a very light hairline scratch 6.5" long that begins between Grant's eyes and goes diagonally to the right crossing the wood to right bottom edge. While this is 6.5" long only an 1/8" sliver of surface paper is off the photo and the hairline on the wood shows very little. Large letters "USG" enclosed the other words, photo and ornate detailing of stems and leaves. Quite amazing and we feel justified in venturing the opinion that this is a unique piece.
