Auction #212 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 988 in auction 212
Item Description
2-1/8" graphic button, one of only three known to us, with a black cat perched on four criss crossed boards bound by rope to the back of a donkey who carries a liquor bottle in a bucket around his neck. The caption "Hoo Hoo" is printed on the donkey's rear leg. The text on the boards read "8th Annual Convention Welcome Sep. 9, 1899 Denver, Colo." A small age trace on the W&H back paper. Celluloid has single tiny raised dot. Button is glossy and Exc. and displays Mint. The fraternal group issuing this formed in 1892 with the formal name "International Concatenated Order Of Hoo Hoo, Inc." Some names for their officers where inspired by Lewis Carroll's The Hunting Of The Snark, for example, their chief executive was referred to as Snark Of The Universe. The black cat's tail forms a figure 9. Quite the fun group and W&H designers went all out to produce a button for their 1899 convention that reflected their desire for an unconventional and unregimented group to foster "The Health, Happiness And Long Life Of Its Members." Previous auction results exceed $900.00.
