Item Description
2-3/8" wide highly embossed silvered brass badge with horizontal pin on the reverse. Reverse has .75" diameter green corrosion mark but the front of the badge remains Exc. with just slight silvering loss. Top has a crown followed by spread winged eagle holding a propeller in its talons. Text reads "K.U.K. Luftfahrtruppe 1916." This inscription translates to 'Imperial And Royal Aviation Troops.' When war broke out the Air Service had only 39 operable aircraft but by the end of 1914, the first year of the war, they had upped the operational aircraft to 147 deployed in 14 units. The pilots of these planes saw combat on both the East Front and Italian Front. Rare in our experience.
