Item Description
8.5x11" 2-page carbon copy typed contract is dated June 27, 1957, and was prepared for artist and studio signature on two pages of original "Walt Disney Productions" letterhead (Weston Bond watermark) w/small Mickey Mouse image on first page at top. Document was hand-signed at bottom of second page in blue ink by Fess Parker and William H. Anderson, Vice President in Charge of Studio Operations for Walt Disney Productions. Pencil notes to front page indicate that Disney's signed contract had been returned to the Burbank offices on July 8, 1957. Contract covered the period of 1957-1958. The legal language for this contract was prepared by Richard T. Morrow on behalf of Walt Disney Productions. Morrow served as General Counsel at the time. It is believed that the original signed typed copy (top copy) was returned to the Disney offices of Morrow, the artist's signed copy retained for Fess Parker's personal files at the Famous Artists Corporation in Beverly Hills, CA. This particular contract represents the second year of what was intended to be a seven year contract w/Parker. During the first two years of Parker's association w/the studio (1954-1956), Walt Disney personally held the contractual agreements w/Parker, the first contract was issued in 1954 as production began for the "Davy Crockett" episode on the "Disneyland" weekly TV anthology series. Parker was paid $350 per week for his services in what would become the biggest live-action success that the Walt Disney Studio had ever known. After the unexpected success of the franchise, Parker was granted a hefty raise to $500 per week, and more importantly, Parker negotiated w/Walt Disney for a 10% share of the merchandising rights for all Davy Crockett merchandise. The following year (1956-1957), Parker sought the assistance of Famous Artists Corporation to represent his interests, bringing an end to Walt Disney's personal participation in Parker's contract negotiations. The change initiated by Parker did not endear him to Walt Disney in considering prominent new assignments within the studio. Parker's new agent successfully exchanged Parker's 10% merchandise participation for a substantial raise in salary. In 1956-1957, due to Parker's agent's negotiations, Parker's contract was extended to an unprecedented seven years, w/Parker receiving $2,000 in weekly salary. The contract offered here represents the contract extension for the second year of that seven-year contract. It proved to be Parker's final year w/Walt Disney Productions. As the contract period for 1957-1958 began, Parker saw his assignments include publicity tours for the release of "Old Yeller." While immensely successful, Parker's role was limited to only a few scenes in the beginning and end of the film. Finally, he would be assigned to co-star in "The Light In The Forest," again playing only a minor supporting role. When asked to play only a bit part w/minor narration for the film "Tonka," Parker refused. He and the studio agreed to part company at that time. By the time Parker was contracted by NBC to play "Daniel Boone" on TV, he would have one final conversation w/Walt Disney as the new show prepared to launch in 1964. Disney wished Parker success on the series and they had an opportunity to clear the air after nearly a decade of separation. Today, Fess Parker remains among the most beloved of all Disney Legends - Walt Disney's "Davy Crockett." Contract has some minor handling wear, mainly along top margin. Staple holes at top left. First sheet has creasing to lower left but Parker's signature remains Exc. Historic signed contract. Comes with Hake's COA and JSA LOA.
