Item Description
The button is 1.25" showing Howdy as he looked when this button was offered March 23, 1948 as part of the Howdy Doody for President campaign. The show at that time was carried over only five East Coast stations and the offer of the button was made a total of seven times. NBC Television was astonished by 60,000 requests that poured into their mailroom. The incredible response to this button offer inspired national firms like Colgate, Continental Baking, Ovaltine and Mars Candy to quickly sign on as show sponsors. The button is Mint as made and pinned to the original card which came with it to the person making the request. Card includes NBC address, facsimile signature of "Howdy Doody" with the first paragraph reading "Dear 'Howdy Doody' Fan: Here Is Your 'I'm For Howdy Doody' Campaign Button. I Want You To Wear It--And Tell Your Friends About My Campaign." Card is lightly tanned with a couple of small creases. An historic pair from the earliest years of children's television.
