Item Description
Each is 1.25". The first reads "Cafe Au Go Go" issued in the mid-1960s to promote the Greenwich Village nightclub located in the basement of 152 Bleecker Street. It was here in 1964 that comedian Lenny Bruce was arrested on obscenity charges. The club was the first New York venue for the Grateful Dead. Richie Havens and the Blue Projects were weekly regulars. Jimi Hendrix sat in with blues harp player James Cotton there in 1968. Many other famous 1960s music groups performed here. Second button is also 1.25" and reads "Tuli Kupferberg/The Second Coming." Curl edge has small text "©Andy Clatt" (significance unknown to us). Kupferberg was an American counterculture poet, author, cartoonist, pacifist anarchist, publisher and co-founder of the band The Fugs. The Fugs ran in the same circles as Andy Warhol, Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention, Jimi Hendricks, Janis Joplin and other icons of the 1960s, often performing at peace protests. This button is from the summer of 1969. Both are Mint. Marshall Levin Collection. Comes with COA.
