An MTV Video Music Award (commonly abbreviated as a VMA) is an award presented by the cable channel MTV to honor the best in the music video medium. Originally conceived as an alternative to the Grammy Awards (in the video category), the statue given to winners depicts an astronaut on an "MTV" moon surface base, one of the earliest and most iconic promotional representations of MTV. The statue was conceived by Manhattan Design — also designers of the original MTV logo—based on the 1981 "Top Of The Hour" animation created by Fred Seibert and produced by Buzz Potamkin at Buzzco Associates. Award stands 12" tall (12.25" tall to top of separate metal "MTV" flag pole. Heavy cast metal statuette has been chrome-plated and is quite lustrous. Award was presented to English avant-garde synthpop group Art of Noise, formed in early 1983 by Gary Langan and J.J. Jeczalik, along w/Anne Dudley, Trevor Horn and Paul Morley. The group is perhaps best known for the international Top 20 singles "Kiss" and "Peter Gunn", the latter of which won a 1986 Grammy Award. This award was presented for "Breakthrough Video 1989" and has etched brushed metal plaque on front of base reading "Art Of Noise Featuring Tom Jones - 'Kiss' - Metropolitan Entertainment." Art of Noise released a cover of Prince's song "Kiss," featuring Tom Jones on vocals. The song became the band's biggest hit to that point, reaching number 18 on the US dance charts and number five on the UK Singles Chart. Tom Jones later recorded a version of the song for his 2003 "Reloaded: Greatest Hits" album and it became a staple of his live performances. Award has some slight wear to top front of base, but o/w still displays Exc. These awards are highly sought after and rarely come up for auction.
