Item Description
Undoubtedly the most famous poster from the Family Dog series, as well as the most recognized image ever used by The Grateful Dead, offered here is a highly sought-after 14x20" first printing of this classic concert poster printed on vellum. "The Bindweed Press San Francisco" name appears immediately above the right side of the ticket strip. Many originals show some degree of over-inking. Poster is for Sept. 16-17, 1966 concerts at Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco, CA. that featured The Grateful Dead and Oxford Circle. Art by Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley features the now iconic Grateful Dead image of a skeleton w/roses on its head in a rose garden as originally drawn by late 19th and early 20th Century artist Edward Joseph Sullivan. Poster has all-over even moderate aging and pinholes at corners. Upper left has tiny tip off corner and faint 2" crease. Lower left has 3.25" crease at corner. Back has 2" square of aged tape residue at corners (which does not show through onto front) and scattered aging. Poster shows scattered handling wear w/some creases and scattered margin wear. VG overall, but still displays nicely w/strong color. While wear is evident, it is important to remember that these posters served as advertisements and were meant to be displayed to promote these concerts. As such, wear is to be expected and high grade examples are scarce. One of the top rock concert posters of the 1960s, and considered by many to be the ultimate poster for The Grateful Dead.
