Item Description
Pair of 5-1/8x7.5" hardcover printings of Gaston Leroux's novel. First is the first American printing by The Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1911. 362 pages include color frontispiece and three of four double-page color illustrations. Missing is "In The Lair After Philippe Drowns" illustration. Front cover has embossed Phantom image, showing him in his Red Death guise. Cover shows some edge wear, mainly at corners and top/bottom of spine, which has some aging. Two later pages have 1" tears at bottom center. Fine overall w/Fine/VF pages. Second is 1925 Photoplay Edition featuring frontispiece, two double-page color illustrations and three bw illustrations. Frontipiece and one bw illustration feature images of Lon Chaney as The Phantom from the classic 1925 film, one showing him unmasked, the other showing him in Red Death guise. Cover shows lt. wear to corner and top/bottom of spine. VF. Interior pages are lightly aged and VF/Exc. Nice early pair.
