Item Description
4-1/8x4.5x1.25" deep cast metal figural award w/gold luster finish. Award features MGM's Leo the Lion and family and was awarded at "Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer 12th Annual Sales Convention At The Studio - May 2-7, 1937" as noted by raised text on base front. Awards were presented to each salesman in attendance. Appearing at the convention were some of MGM's biggest stars including Clark Gable, Jean Harlow, Joan Crawford, Norma Shearer and others. The convention suffered tragedy when a young starlet (one among a number of young women employed by MGM to entertain the men who had traveled to participate in the convention) was raped at the Hal Roach Studio Ranch by a Chicago salesman. The crime would be hushed-up by Louis B. Mayer, MGM's legal team, and the Los Angeles court system for nearly 65 years until a writer exposed this sordid bit of history in 2003. Award has scattered luster loss and aging. Front of base (which has original but loose felt pad) has 3" scratch w/glue residue, likely where salesman's name plaque was attached. Fine overall. Scarce and first we've offered in our 47 years. From the Don Maris Collection.
