Item Description
High relief uniface bronze portrait with text “Abraham Lincoln 1809/1865” with name of French sculptor along bottom edge “E.J. Roine.” Medallion is 7.75” diameter set in original oak wood frame 13.75” diameter. Thickness is .75”. Medallion is held to wood by reverse screw and nut and wood back has hanging wire. Wood back has 6 holes about 1/8” each that serve no purpose and which do not go through to the front. Front medallion has glossy bronze finish and displays essentially mint as issued. Created in 1908 for Lincoln’s February 1909 Centennial celebration. See following related piece by Victor D. Brenner. Smaller versions of this design were produced as medals and a silver version was used to decorate the cover of a 1909 limited edition book devoted to Lincoln’s most famous writings and quotations.
