Item Description
7x19.5" porcelain enameled steel sign w/German text "Ortsgruppe - Marburg-Adolf Hitler-Platz," which translates from the German to local branch/office or regional office of Marburg, Adolf Hitler Plaza. Sign was obtained on the march to Berlin towards the end of the European theatre of World War II, pried off the side of a building by a soldier in the US 78th Infantry Division (Lightning Division) and sent stateside. Reverse shows partial maker stamp. Sign shows heavy and obvious wear, clearly showing the effects of the war going on around it. Sign has .75x1.5" piece off lower left corner and edge wear resulting in uneven, scalloped edges w/scattered porcelain enamel wear. Of note, last letter of "Marburg" shows evidence of having been shot, as does the space between "Adolf" and "Hitler," a rather definite statement on how Allied soldiers felt about the German dictator. Sign has moderate scattered aging w/crazing to edges of sign from it being pried off of building. Good/VG, but historically important piece of WWII memorabilia.
