Item Description
17x22.5" wood frame w/Plexiglas over archival mat reveals illustration board w/12x18" India ink image area w/four panels. c. 1950. Art features witch-like mother telling her large hideous son to "Fetch Yourself A Twig of Some Sort" to which he replies "Uh..Sure, Maw!" as he rips up a tree by its roots. Mother then gestures at couple silhouette and tells son "Now Go Beat That Fella's Time An She's Yours!" Large bottom panel has man getting hit in back of head as girlfriend looks on in horror. Art has been signed in ink by Jack Davis near bottom of large panel. Comes w/pair of 4x6" color photos of the artist w/this original in his studio. First panel has a few minor scuffs, page has even lt. aging. Fine/VF overall. Jack Davis began his comic book career by taking art samples, likely including this one, to show William Gaines and Al Feldstein at the EC offices in New York City. He was hired and would go on to work on most of the EC titles including covers to "Tales From The Crypt" #29-46, "Mad" and "Panic" as well as war titles and "Trump, Humbug" and "Help" for Harvey Kurtzman. Incredibly historic and well-drawn art which helped get Jack Davis some of his first paychecks in the publishing industry. Professionally matted and framed and ready for display.
