Item Description
1.25" with W&H back paper. Button pictures and reads "For Vice Pres. John D. Long." Long was a Massachusetts governor and served as a Secretary of the Navy from March 1897 until 1902. Roosevelt was Assistant Secretary of the Navy, appointed April, 1897, as a reward for his enthusiastic campaigning on behalf of William McKinley and Long was his boss. After losing the V.P. nomination to T.R. in 1900 Long continued as Secretary until he resigned from the navy in 1902 and returned to Massachusetts becoming an advocate for both prohibition and women's suffrage. Exc. and displaying Mint. Rare. Only 2nd seen.
