Item Description
In our last auction we had a button almost certainly from 20th anniversary of this event in 1906. The button had four letters at center representing the words "Hay Market Veterans Association" with surrounding text "Riot May 4th 1886." The piece in this auction is also likely from 1906. It is a solid steel die 1.25" in diameter by 1" tall with the circular design on the top .75" in diameter. The design is not in reverse. It features a six point star enclosing three lines of text "Police/May 4 1886/Chicago." Beginning at the lower left and going clockwise are six letters standing for the words "Veterans Of The Hay Market Riot." We do not know how this die would have been used or what it was intended to produce but with the word "Police" on the item it seems that the veterans being referred to are from the law enforcement community rather than any labor group. This historic 1886 event was related to the earliest years of a long struggle of workers to achieve an eight-hour day. Also see eight-hour day items in lots #289 & 290.
