Item Description
Each of these is a 7/8" real photo sepia. These buttons were issued in conjunction with the womens' positions within the group "Ladies Of The Maccabees Of The World." Back papers on each of the pairs read "Fraternally Yours Supr. Commander Mrs. Lillian M. Hollister L.O.T.M.O.T.W." The other reads "Fraternally Yours Supr. Rec. Keeper Miss Bina M. West L.O.T.M.O.T.W." One of her papers has .25" tan age mark. One of the Hollister buttons has hairline .25" cello split but with cello laying flat. All four buttons display Mint. In addition to their positions within this fraternal group Hollister was an early leader of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. She was also a member of Woman's Press Association. While she was somewhat late to join the Suffrage movement by the early 1900s she was of the conviction that the 'Speediest And Surest Methods Of Reform Will Be Found In The Use Of The Ballot By Women.' Bina West in 1892 founded the Women's Benefit Association, one of the first fraternal societies for women. She too was a vocal supporter of the suffrage movement, representing the National Council Of Women Of The United States at the International Council Of Women in Geneva, Switzerland in 1908. She made speeches throughout the U.S. in support of suffrage. These buttons date from the late 1890s but portray important suffrage leaders active in the early 1900s.
