Item Description
2-1/8" button with metal back stamped by maker W&H. Front reads "Resettlement Administration/Hightstown" with large serial number "640." Surface has light general wear in reflected light including raised bump and three widely scattered 1/16" tiny cracks but all barely showing with normal viewing. This button has a fascinating story behind it. The project was known as Jersey Homesteads and the concept was to build 200 flat-roofed garage-like homes designed for Manhattan garment workers who paid in $500.00 each to participate in a co-operative garment factory to be built on the grounds. The project began in 1933 and the construction was well documented photographically. Google the words "Troubles Continue For Hightstown" to see a series of photographs from 1935 that include clear photos of workmen wearing this identical button, although not this precise serial number. This community was meant to be the first of a series and was supported by three Jewish labor bodies: The Workman's Circle, the United Hebrew Trades, and the National Jewish Workers' Alliance. This project was a financial disaster and did not inspire any other similar projects. Jersey Homesteads was transferred to the Federal Public Housing Authority and after F.D.R.'s death the community residents changed their community name to Roosevelt, New Jersey. Much more fascinating information about this project is on the internet. Rare.
