Item Description
1-5/8" silvered badge with lettering incised and accented in black reading "Merion Golf/29/Caddy." Speck of black off one of the numerals and just a little brass tone showing through the silvering on the left. Back of the piece has rectangular metal plate holding a vertical bar pin with the back of the piece stamped by maker "G.C.S. & S. Wks./234 Arch St./Phila. Pa." Small oxidation on the back plate but exceedingly minor. Hugh Irving Wilson designed the East Course which opened in 1912 and the West Course which opened in 1914. The East Course is consistently rated by Golf Digest as among America's greatest golf courses and it has hosted five U.S. Opens. The course is famous for its wicker baskets instead of flags on the pins which golfers do not like since they do not reveal the direction or intensity of the wind. We estimate this piece to be from the 1930s if not earlier. Unique. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
