Item Description
Heavy embossed silvered metal badge 2-3/8" tall with oval plate at bottom holding serial number "1668." Front shows raised image of the Seal of City of Philadelphia with group name surrounding. On March 20, 1917 the city's Mayor Thomas B. Smith appointed this group which initially aided a naval recruiting campaign in the Philadelphia area but in general coordinated all efforts to assist in war preparations. This group was comprised of a military reserve of 2,500 men who helped keep peace in the city throughout the war. Apparently no more than 2,500 of these badges, each with a serial number were issued and this is a rare surviving example. Many pinpoint dots of tarnish over the metal finish but for the most part just seen under magnification. Only example we've seen.
