Item Description
First three pieces are from WWII era while the lighter is c.1950s. First is 5/8" enamel on brass pin reading "U S Naval Service." Small oxidation on reverse. Next is 1.5" tall brass eagle and anchor design with text reading "U S Merchant Marine." Back of one wing is actually marked with the word "Sterling." although finish is in brass. Third item is related and also with brass tone as well as silver tone on the front and with "Sterling" on the back. Front reads "United States Merchant Marine." Anchor and shield are accented by compass point designs. Mint luster. Last is a "Penguin" (Japan) lighter with enamel emblem on front and text "USS Catfish/SS-339." This Balao-Class submarine was launched November 19, 1944. It did sail for Pearl Harbor and went on its first war patrol August 8th with the cease-fire order coming August 15th. The sub was then based in San Diego. It did see action during the Korean War which is most likely the era this lighter dates from. The back of the lighter is blank except for a small raised dot of metal. It may have held a second emblem now missing. While lighter shows general wear with fluid and flint it would be in working condition. The first submarine associated lighter we've come upon.
