Item Description
6.5x29" Strathmore artboard has original pen and ink (w/blue pencil shading) art by legendary "Mickey Mouse" daily strip artist Floyd Gottfredson for March 9, 1934 installment of "The Captive Castaways" storyline in which Mickey and Minnie Mouse are held by Pegleg Pete aboard his ship. Gottfredson began his career as an apprentice animator at Walt Disney Studios, later becoming the artist behind the "Mickey Mouse" daily strip from 1932 until his retirement in 1975. Strip features five panels in which Mickey is seen in four, Pete in two. Strip shows Mickey being restrained by Pete's smuggling crew and having a rope noose fitted about his neck as Pete threatens to "Hangs Yuh To A Yardarm." Second panel shows Pete giving signal to hoist Mickey up. Third panel shows Mickey kicking stomach of one of Pete's crew, freeing himself and climbing up the very rope that was about to be used to hang him. Last panel features Mickey atop the mast, calling Pete a "Big, Dumb Ox." First panel has 1934 Walt Disney Enterprises copyright strip w/"Great Britain Rights Reserved" text. Last panel has "3-9" inked date and left margin has "Ben Day #509" designation in blue pencil. Artboard has some scattered lt. dust soiling and aging, w/a few tiny spots of staining to last panel, by Mickey image. Art o/w remains clean and VF/Exc. This item was obtained by our consignor as a child in the 1950s and is fresh to the collecting community. Rare and historic Disney art.
