Auction #214 - Part II
Item numbers 1008 through 2793 in auction 214
Item Description
9" tall painted cast iron. This is second of three versions of Mickey Mouse cast metal banks made in France by Jules Manil in the mid-1930s. The first version was only marked "Depose" on the back, this version is boldly stamped on back of ears "License" and "Exclusive." Underside of feet has raised "Walt Disney" name and "J. Manil Vivier Au Court" text, indicating this item was produced in Vivier-au-Court in the Ardennes in northern France. There is a screw on the back holding the two halves together and this is removed in order to retrieve the coins. Coin slot is on top back edge of his head. Including this example, we are aware of less than a half dozen of this version in existence. Paint on face and hands has darkened slightly but this is typical of the other originals we've seen. Moderate paint wear, 60% remaining. VG/Fine overall. Comes w/copy of period Manil ad noting that a cast aluminum variety in addition to this cast iron version (see following item #1783) was also produced. Rare and only the second we've offered in our 48 years.
