Auction #214 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 1007 in auction 214
Item Description
7x12.25x6" deep with opening 6-3/4x5.5" wide. Thin white porcelain featuring image of Scott, hat in hand, arm outstretched, standing next to his horse with a shipyard in the background. A facsimile signature at bottom right completes the image. Lithophanes are rare and among the most highly prized pre-1896 display items. A thin sheet of translucent porcelain has the image details both incised and in relief. When back lit the white surface gives way to a range of greys providing a three-dimensional effect which is altered by the intensity of the light source. Scattered minor surface oxidation to original metal frame otherwise undamaged. NM. Julie Powell Collection.
