Item Description
7.75" tall model stands on 10.75" dia. clear/black plastic stand w/"Grumman" and "NASA" logos. This early hand-assembled model features just these two logos, later (post-landing) models feature a Neil Armstrong quote on the base as well. Model was made by Topping, a major manufacturer of military and corporate display models in the 1950s and 1960s and dates to pre-lunar landing, 1967-1969. This model is made of finely detailed cast plastic w/numerous metal details including antenna, legs and ladder. The model separates into two parts, the launch pad base and the return module, just like the actual spacecraft. These models are often seen sitting on the desk of NASA astronauts in official NASA portraits of the era and these models were given to astronauts, dignitaries, flight directors and subcontractors. 1/40 Scale model is 100% complete w/very little aging/wear. Minor flaking of the silver paint from the metal ladder, legs and railings. Felt on underside has some scattered insect damage and black painted bottom of base has some wear at edges. VF overall. Topping is well-documented as having produced the earliest versions of the approved lander, the number of models originally produced is an area of much conjecture. Complete examples of this model are difficult to find.
