Item Description
See next item #1587. 22x28” thin art board has 20x25” India ink image including logo art and 12 panels for March 27. Page is subtitled “He Says No Indian Names For His Kiddies But Changes His Mind Later”. Logo art has baby bunny using blocks to spell “Iwanta” and saying “How’s Dat Pop?” as Peter looks on. Storyline has Peter in all 12 panels w/Mr. Possum suggesting he call his new son “Iwanta”. Peter doesn’t like the idea but son asks for several things saying “IWANTA” leading Peter to get upset and run to a judge begging to change baby’s name to “Iwanta”. Art is boldly signed by creator “Harrison Cady” in the logo area, and signed again in last panel. Complete w/N.Y. Tribune copyright paper in logo area. Panels 7, 8, 10, and 11 have dark circular moisture mark, blank margins have aging, but rest of art is clean. Cady is noted for his cartoon work for “Life”, notably insects, art for Thornton Burgess’ children’s books and his own books. “Peter Rabbit” ran from Aug. 15,1920 until 1948. A funny and prime early example, done within six months of the strip's inception.
