Item Description
9.5x12" sheet of animation paper has 6-3/8x8.5" area squared off in red pencil w/4x7.5" image area w/art in lead pencil w/additional colored pencil accents. For the 1935 animated short "The Band Concert," which was produced in three-strip Technicolor by Walt Disney Productions and released by United Artists. The film was the first Mickey Mouse cartoon produced in color and remains one of the most highly acclaimed Disney shorts. This short marked the fourth film appearance of Donald Duck and he was the only speaking character in this short, selling ice cream at the concert. Art is by noted Disney animator Dick Huemer, who joined the Fleischer Studio in 1923 where he developed the Koko the Clown character. Later he moved to Hollywood and worked as an animator and director for the Charles Mintz studio before moving to the Disney Studio, where he remained for the duration of his career, except for a three-year hiatus 1948-1951. His Disney career saw involvement in "Fantasia" and "Dumbo" as well as several animated shorts. Wonderfully detailed art was done early in development of "The Band Concert," featuring Donald pushing a vendor cart marked "Peanuts." This was changed to "Ice Cream" in the short. Donald's cart has a number of ice cream cones, bags of peanuts and a vat w/ladle in it. Donald hefts a bag of peanuts in separate red pencil hand, in which a pink pencil pig's face has been added to bag image, giving it the appearance of a pig. An editorial "?" notation has been added to this area, questioning the depiction of the bag of peanuts. Another note in lead pencil draws attention to cart's wheel, which is noted as "Wheel Off Center." In addition, sheet has been signed by Huemer in blue ink, Huemer inscribing "Those Were The Days" and drawing a cartoon character face. Sheet has lt. aging and upper left has some handling creases, but image area remains Exc. Highly detailed and truly spectacular Donald Duck art.
