Item Description
Both are drawn in India ink on thin art boards. 1921 daily has 5x18” image area w/Winnie in all four panels. Top margin has lt. pencil title “She Bit”. Winnie’s in country picking flowers w/Simon and thinks boy is using real flies while fishing. She drops flowers as he shows her fish and yells “So Did These Suckers!”. Dated in ink “© 1921- Chicago Tribune in panel one, signed in ink “Branner” in panel four. We’re unsure of month and day as top margin has “Sunday Jun 12 1921” ink stamp date, but this is obviously a daily. Dec. 24, 1924 daily has 5.75x20” image area w/Winkle family members in four panels. Top margin has lt. pencil title “The Winkles Will Never Know Now”. Young Perry thinks wrapped Christmas box is express wagon or “Ottomobile”, Pa thinks it’s a radio or smoking table. Winnie and family decide to open box, but express man tells them it belongs to “Wingle”. Signed in ink “Branner” in panel four, complete w/Chicago-Tribune copyright label. Both image areas Exc. Superb early examples for the first comic strip to feature a working girl which began Sept. 20, 1920. From the Schechter Family collection.
