Item Description
Lot of four glossy 8x10" movie stills (three have slight margin trims) from the original release of the lost 1920 silent film "The Revenge Of Tarzan," based on the 1915 novel "The Return Of Tarzan" by Tarzan creator Edgar Rice Burroughs. The film was produced by the Great Western Film Producing Company, a subsidiary of Numa Pictures Corporation. It was sold to Goldwyn Pictures Corporation before release. Outside of the US, the film is known by its working title, "The Return Of Tarzan." The title was changed for its American release in July 1920. This is further corroborated by the "The Return Of Tarzan" Goldwyn stamps on backs of three stills, which were crossed out w/large handwritten "The Revenge Of Tarzan" title and caption above each in pencil. The film starred actor Gene Pollar (New York City firefighter Joseph Pohler), who in his brief film career was the second actor to portray Tarzan on film. Pollar is pictured as Tarzan on three of the four stills, one w/elephant (noted as being named "Charlie" on reverse), one w/Numa the lion and one featuring Pollar afloat on piece of wood (same image as signed still #2133). Non-Tarzan still shows group on boat. Scattered wear/aging. Fine overall. All promotional material for this lost film is rare.
