Item Description
5/8” button with W&H back paper. Hake #22 with 2004 guide value of $125. While the button has long been recognized as a Davis item, the paperwork that comes with this piece is the first we’ve seen and provides all of the background detail on its use . First is a 9.5” wide envelope showing the same image of rooster crowing “1924” at upper left. Envelope has Washington, D.C. June 13, 1924 cancellation. Upper edge of envelope is a little rough from being opened and reverse is covered in pencil notations. Next is 8.5x11” “Democratic National Committee” stationery with date of June 14, 1924 with secretarially signed signature of “Cordell Hull” who was “Chairman” of the committee. Letter is addressed to a New Hampshire man and letter text includes “It Is A Pleasure To Enclose A Badge Of Honor, That Goes Only To National Democratic Victory Club Members, Which I Hope You Will Wear Until Election Day.” The letter states that two buttons were enclosed along with two blank checks and the instructions to give these to “Two Democratic Friends.” One button and check must have been given away but one button and blank check remains with this group. Letter includes much additional text about the “Victory Clubs” including their existence in more than “30 states.” Letter and blank check are NM. The button is NM displaying Mint although with a tiny red dot at lower right edge as printed. While the button is scarce the paperwork accompanying it is even more so.
