Item Description
This big celluloid is unlisted in Hake. It is constructed with a celluloid front and a tin reverse which has a pair of small holes on the left and right side for the insertion of thin wires that would allow its attachment to a car. Wires are no longer present. Curl names maker Bastian Bros Co. and their large union bug appears on the front right. Full text is “For Governor Alfred E. Smith.” Very few of these survived and only a couple examples are known in the hobby with most of those more severely damaged than this one which has only the following minimal defects. Mostly seen only in reflected light are five hairline scratches with the longest pair about 7/8” long and both on the background areas. On the image there is only a small ¼” line in the shaded area of his neck plus a tiny 1/8” line on his suit collar. The only missing celluloid is a pinpoint dot from the very top edge and a 1/16x1/8” surface fragment off below the last letter of his name. The entire 6” diameter surface retains nice gloss. The first example we’ve been able to offer in five decades.
