Item Description
Both are spiral bound w/stiff paper covers. 1936 book is 12x16.5” w/embossed front cover w/stars flowing toward earth. Contains 26 double sided pages printed on slick paper. First several pages are promo info including list of strips, color comics, columns, fiction, magazine pages. Next five sheets are devoted to daily strips w/five per character along w/artist photo. Includes: “Tarzan” by Rex Maxon w/Edgar Rice Burroughs photo, “Li’l Abner” w/Al Capp photo, “Fritzi Ritz” w/Ernie Bushmiller photo, The Captain And The Kids” w/Rudolph Dirks photo, “Grin And Bear It” w/George Lichty photo, and “Jim Hardy” w/Dick Moores photo. Next eight sheets are choice full color Sunday pages. Incudes: “Tarzan” by Hal Foster, “Buster Beans” by Robt. Dickey, “Cynical Susie” by Becky Sharp, “Fritzi Ritz”, “Li’l Abner”, “The Captain And The Kids”. Remaining six sheets are b/w related to other UFS features. 1944 book is 14.75x21.75” w/22 single sided sheets for August, printed on newsprint due to WWII wartime paper shortage. First six sheets are devoted to Sunday pages, remainder consists of daily strips and panels w/no other features. Contents are similar to 1936 book, except there are no introductory pages, no artist’s photos, the “Tarzan” Sunday page is drawn by Burne Hogarth, and book has the addition of Bill Mauldin’s “Up Front” panel cartoons on one sheet. First book has rough last page and is missing back cover, first few sheets of second book have right side margin edge wear. Both book covers are just Good, but contents overall Fine/VF. Extremely limited distribution. Just sent to newspaper editors and those in the trade. From the Don Maris Collection.
