Unlike most examples of this scarce 1” celluloid the cream background is perfectly clean and with no areas of darkening. After exposure to light button glows intensely in the dark and sharply outlines the black areas of the character name and profile image. Button was issued in 1939 and came with a membership card titled “The Secret Pledge Of The Shadow.” The card pledge was to “Stamp Out The Forces Of Evil In This Land. I Shall Recognize Other Member’s Of The SHADOW SOCIETY By This Card And By The Magic Button Which Only Member’s May Possess.” Curl of button names “Cruver Mfg. Co. Chicago.” Metal back is black as made with fixed horizontal bar pin. The surrounding celluloid has five very tiny splits, nothing bigger than 1/16” and laying extremely flat and with only one creating the slightest edge bump at the very top when the button is viewed from the front. Although not marked as such, we believe this was a blue coal premium. Scarce and an exceptional high grade example.
