Item Description
17x24.5" Strathmore art board has 14-3/8x22.25" India ink image area w/11 panels. Art was created by series creator George Herriman for Nov. 3, 1935 Sunday page and features hand-drawn "Krazy Kat" title logo in first panel. Storyline has Offissa Pupp in each of the following 10 panels, lamenting Ignatz's behavior, referring to him as "That Sinful, Sinister Scorpion" and a "Vandal." Second panel features Ignatz' three children walking in a line while third panel features Ignatz' wife, all of whom are rarely seen characters. Offissa Pupps ponders being kinder as he looks at Ignatz and cries "My Conscience Has At Last Found Me Out - And Found Me At Fault." In the seventh through ninth panels, Offissa Pupp is confronted by a ghostly specter who scares him into writing a note reading in part "Instead Of The Law's Bitter Fervor I Will Try The Milk Of Kindness, The Unction Of Gentleness - signed Officer B. Pupp," further stating "This Will Also Please That Dear Kat." Second to last panel reveals Krazy Kat watching as Pupp writes his note, a question mark over her head as a pair of hands extend from back of ghost. Last panel has a wide scene w/Offissa Pupp reading his note as Ignatz steps out from back of costume and throws a brick at Krazy Kat as she walks away, saying "It Must Be A L'il Game Him An' Offissa Pupp Is Playing - So I Wunt Inta-Fee." Second to last panel has King Features Syndicate copyright strip and art has been signed and dated in ink "Herriman 11-3" in last panel. Blank margins at top center and left/right center have "Nov 3 1935" ink stamp date; a faint date stamp appears at lower right. Margins have scattered dust soiling/aging w/some tape staining at corners (which show some foxing), none of which affect art image area, which remains clean. Left margin is a bit uneven as trimmed, but art will easily mat and frame for an Exc. appearance. George Herriman (1880-1944) created "Krazy Kat" in 1913. One of publisher William Randolph Hearst's favorites, the strip w/the anthropomorphic cat set in Coconino County, Arizona ran until 1944. Because of its exceptional nature, this particular example has been reprinted in every major "Krazy Kat" book and Herriman publication. A superior and funny example including the Ignatz Family, ever-changing bkg. scene including desert vistas, brick gag and superb inking. A truly exceptional example of Herriman art.
