Item Description
10x12x2-3/8" deep cardboard box w/illustrated lid once contained 80 boxes containing candy and "Surprise" by Leader Novelty Candy Co. of Brooklyn, NY. ©Superman, Inc. c. 1940. Boxes featured back panel cards to be cut out, see next item #2460. Boxes originally sold for 1¢ apiece. While this store box is empty, it remains an impressive display piece as lid's main panel features great full body image of Superman leaping over mountains. This image was reversed as printed, as evidenced by the backwards "S" symbol on Superman's chest. Left/right side panels feature repeated image of Superman lifting tree trunk and rescuing man w/portrait image from waist up is featured at center. Other side panels feature classic image of Superman breaking chains and also feature company info and candy ingredient list. Box features small traces of wear/aging w/some scattered tiny age dots, but box remains bright and clean for the most part and is tight w/no corner splits. Box bottom has two creases to side panel, but not distracting or noticeable as displayed w/lid in place. Fine/VF. Very rare, w/only a few known examples. Franco Toscanini Collection.
