Item Description
9-7/8x13-1/2". 1940s. Additional text "Special Attention To Tourists/Ashland Virginia". Printers mark at bottom center reads "Herald-Progress Print, Ashland, Va." Jim Crow laws made travel difficult for African Americans. Black-owned hotels and establishments utilized signs like this to indicate safe resting spots for travelers. Light brown edge toning consistent with signs being stacked at different angles. All four corners have wear the most notable is minor loss at top right and left. Light crease at right extending at angle from the middle edge to the bottom edge beneath the "A" in "Virginia". This scarce Jim Crow period relic still displays boldly. Good/VG.
