Item Description
10-7/8x17" stiff paper folder titled "The Man Of Tomorrow - Superman" opens to 17x21.75". Issued by McClure Newspaper Syndicate in New York City in Fall 1939 to promote the debut of the "Superman" Sunday page in newspapers starting Nov. 5, 1939. The "Superman" daily strip debuted on Jan. 16, 1939 and the strip ran continuously until May 1966. At its peak, the strip was run in over 300 newspapers around the country w/a readership of over 20 million. Cover features great full body image of Superman breaking through cover. He is pictured again inside standing in classic hands-on-hips pose, surrounded by newspaper images. Promotional text reads "Time Magazine Says: 'Last Word In Adventure Comics, Superman Is Rapidly Becoming The No. 1 Juvenile Vogue In The U.S.'" as well as text about Superman, some of which reads "Superman Flies Through The Air With The Greatest Of Ease; He Swims Faster Than A Torpedo Can Travel; He Pierces Brick Walls And Vaults Skyscrapers; He Battles Airships And Submarines Singlehanded." Back cover shows "Promotion Mats" featuring "Superman" title as well as classic images of Superman breaking chains and leaping over buildings. Horizontal fold at center as issued, folder has some handling wear w/pinch creases and .75" tear along this fold and some scattered handling wear/dust soiling. Folder has even lt. aging. VG overall. Limited distribution, mainly sent to newspaper editors. Very rare and the only known example. Franco Toscanini Collection.
