Item Description
10.75x16.75". c1965. Features photograph from the arraignment of 18 of the 21 Mississippians in connection with the murder of three Civil Rights workers in Philadelphia, Mississippi. James Chaney, Mickey Schwerner and Andrew Goodman were arrested and then released to Klansman who tortured and murdered them eventually hiding their bodies on a remote farm. During the search for the three murdered workers eight more bodies of African Americans were found in the woods of Mississippi. At front are Deputy Sheriff Cecil Price, left, and Sheriff Lawrence Rainey, right, the photo was taken by a Life Magazine photographer at the moment Rainey cracked a joke during the arraignment. Subsequent trials would see Rainey acquitted and Price sentenced to 6 years for a federal violation of the workers civil rights. Price would serve only a little more than 4 years in prison for his connection to the murders. No defendant convicted in the case served more than 6 years for their crimes and none were ever convicted of murder. The murders were a turning point in the Civil Rights movement that brought national attention to the atrocities being committed against African Americans in the South. Reverse of poster has light brown spots of toning covering nearly 75% but not visible from front. Corners have staple holes and a faint trace of light brown toning at lower right. Scuffing at center between main figure's shoulders worst of which is a less than .25" area of surface loss just beneath the left hand of Price. These minor flaws distract minimally from this historically significant poster. VG displaying Fine. Milo Pyne Collection.
