Item Description
6x9". 17 single sided sheets and one two sided sheet of hand written notes for a speech given September 27, 1964 to the "Seattle Branch NAACP". Notes are written in short hand and cover topics from education, African American history, 1964 Presidential campaign, state's rights, freedom summer murders, and voting rights. Notable quotes include: "When Say' Lv To States Can't Help Think Miss... Except Bribe Nvr Wud Find Their Bodies", "If U Vote For States Rites U Vote For Murders, Too", and concludes with "U Here In N Hv Oblgn To Peopl In S- Y'r Free. U Can Vote. If U Don't Use Yr Posn To Free Bro In South Shame Be On U". Slight bleeding of blue ink throughout. "Roy Wilkins" inscribed at upper left not in his hand. Very minor toning of paper consistent with age. VF. Also included is original event program featuring image of Wilkins on front and striking graphic of African American Civil War soldiers converging on Confederate troops on reverse. Interior has eight mimeograph pages including a biography of Wilkins, a list of executive board members for the branch, program, advertisement for NAACP lifetime "Full Membership $500", donor list and list of Washington State branch presidents.
