Item Description
11x16". These were produced for the 1966 Georgia Democratic run-off election where Maddox defeated Ellis Arnell. Maddox would take the Democratic nomination for Governor and ride it to a victory. Maddox is famous for being so anti-integration that he closed his lunch counter rather than serve African Americans. Handbills read "Maddox Carries Pistol, Turns Away 3 Negros". The supplied caption for the photo reads "Negro Minister And Restaurant Owner At Scene Of Disturbance. The Rev. Albert Dunn, Left, Lester Maddox Jr., Lester Maddox". Additional text reads "Do You Want Lester Maddox As Your Governor? If Not You Must Vote On Wednesday, Sept. 28". Horizontal fold at center and paper loss at upper left effecting the image on one of the handbills. VG/Fine. First we've seen. Milo Pyne Collection.
