Item Description
Each piece is 1.25”, the first holed as made. The first piece is brass or copper and was once silvered although most of this has evaporated. The piece has only very minor traces of wear otherwise. Front depicts Hayes with his name, office he is seeking, and “Centennial 1876/America.” Reverse is similar but pictures Wheeler. DeWitt lists the second piece as Tilden 1876-5 but notes that it is one of three which was issued as a set of satirical tokens. This one is white metal. Obverse has frowning image of Tilden with text around and below “Democratic Party Died Of Tildenopathy,/1876, In The 60th Year Of It’s Age/Shammy Tilden/Let It R.I.P.” Reverse shows a coffin inscribed “S.J.T” on a catafalque with the base inscribed “Sacred To The Memory Of” with a candle to the left and right of the coffin which have been capped by snuffers. Above is “Snuffed Out” while below is “Gone To The Old Old/’World’/To Find A Mother-In Law.” The rim slogan enclosing all of this is “Here Lies Our Little Tilden Dear; He Died Of Reform ‘Loquendi-Rhoea.’” Top front edge has 1/32” hairline indent and reverse rim has 1/16” flat dot but overall condition is NM. A scarce pair. Don & Mildred Wright Collection.
